Bayer and Solynta Launch Hybrid Potato Seeds in Kenya, India

German agrochemicals leader Bayer has announced a partnership with Dutch potato breeding company Solynta to introduce hybrid potato seeds in Kenya and India. This collaboration signifies Bayer's debut in the global potato market and represents its first venture with Solynta, a company known for its innovation in hybrid potato varieties.

The initiative will promote true potato seeds as a viable alternative to traditional seed tubers. Unlike seed tubers, which require 2,500 kg per hectare, true potato seeds need only 25 grams per hectare, offering substantial advantages in logistics and disease management. Bayer will use its distribution channels in Kenya and India to bring Solynta's hybrid varieties to smallholder farmers in remote areas.

The introduction of these true potato seeds is expected to positively impact local communities and enhance food and nutritional security in both countries. Solynta’s CEO Peter Poortinga noted that these seeds are the culmination of nearly two decades of hybrid potato breeding research. This collaboration aims to alleviate the shortage of high-quality potato starting material in Kenya and India, addressing key agricultural needs in these regions. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
