Germany has reclaimed its position as Vietnam’s largest trading partner in Europe in 2025, according to the Vietnam Trade Office in Germany. After briefly slipping to second place in 2024, Germany has returned to the top spot as bilateral trade between the two nations experiences significant growth, fueled by the recovery of the German economy from a prolonged recession.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, trade turnover between Vietnam and Germany reached nearly US$4.5 billion in the first four months of 2025—a robust 23.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Vietnam’s exports to Germany surged to US$3.3 billion, marking a 27.8% rise, while imports from Germany rose to US$1.2 billion, up by 12.4% year-over-year.
This trade dynamic has resulted in a US$2.1 billion trade surplus for Vietnam, a sharp 38.9% increase from the previous year. Key Vietnamese exports to Germany include electronics, textiles, machinery, footwear, and agricultural products. The strengthening of trade ties reflects Germany's increasing demand for high-quality, cost-effective goods from Vietnam as the European nation continues its economic rebound.
The Vietnam Trade Office in Germany attributes this renewed momentum to strengthened trade policies, improved bilateral cooperation, and Germany’s growing reliance on stable trading partners in Asia. With this positive trajectory, both nations are expected to continue expanding economic collaboration across sectors such as manufacturing, technology, green energy, and sustainable development.
This latest development reaffirms Germany’s key role in the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and highlights Vietnam’s growing importance in global supply chains. As Germany regains its status as Vietnam’s top European trading partner, both countries stand to benefit from stronger economic and diplomatic ties.
