Brazil strengthens global ties with celebrations of new international partnerships

28 Feb, 2025

The University of Birmingham has a rich history of international research partnerships, with the Brazil Institute being its latest initiative. Established in late 2023, the Institute aims to strengthen ties between the UK and Brazil by deepening research and educational collaborations. The official launch was marked by a ceremony featuring Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Robin Mason ORB and Brazilian Ambassador Antonio Patriota, highlighting Brazil’s commitment to democracy, sustainability, and peace.

To celebrate these connections, the Brazil Institute is hosting the ‘Celebrate Amazonia’ event from 25 to 28 February. The event features music, dance, and research discussions, aligning with preparations for the upcoming COP30 environmental summit in Belem. Another milestone will be the launch of ‘Engage Amazonia 2025’ in collaboration with Fundação Amazônia de Amparo a Estudos e Pesquisas (FAPESPA), opening new opportunities for University of Birmingham staff and students.

The University maintains extensive collaborations with Brazilian institutions, focusing on clean energy, health, and sustainable urban planning. The Chico Mendes Chair Programme, in partnership with CAPES, brings 15 Brazilian researchers to Birmingham over five years, fostering research in environmental sciences, climate change, and sustainability.

Beyond Brazil, the University’s global network extends to China, India, North America, and Europe. In China, partnerships include joint degree programmes with Jinan University and clinical research collaborations. Indian partnerships focus on clean cooling, plastic pollution, and railway research. Collaborations in North America, particularly with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, span multiple disciplines, while European ties include Leiden University and Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Professor Mason emphasized the University’s dedication to fostering international partnerships that enhance global research and education, reinforcing its role as a key player in worldwide academic collaboration.
