New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon spoke of the China Business Summit 2024 at Auckland, New Zealand, May 20, 2024. The summit, themed "Navigating Today's China," was attended by Luxon and Trade Minister Todd McClay. Representatives from New Zealand and China's business communities discussed strategies for achieving innovative and high-quality development amid a complex international environment.
Luxon highlighted the success of New Zealand's trade relationship with China, noting that the bilateral trade volume reached 38 billion New Zealand dollars last year, significantly increasing since the NZ-China Free Trade Agreement in 2008. He emphasized that trade is vital to New Zealand's economy and reaffirmed the government's commitment to growing the economic relationship with China.
Chinese Ambassador Wang Xiaolong echoed Luxon's sentiments, stressing the robust economic cooperation between the two countries and China's commitment to further developing this relationship. Both leaders highlighted the lack of historical grievances and the complementary nature of their economic interests.
McClay reflected on his recent visit to China, expressing confidence in New Zealand's reputation for producing safe, healthy, and sustainable food products. He also identified opportunities for New Zealand businesses in various sectors within China.
As the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership approaches, Luxon looked forward to continued high-level exchanges and potential future visits to China. Business representatives from New Zealand also expressed optimism about the economic cooperation and opportunities with China, underscoring the significance of this bilateral relationship.
