China is expanding its opposition to India beyond well-known global issues, such as the Ukraine crisis, climate change, and green energy, into various areas discussed at G20 ministerial meetings.
China's objections cover a range of topics, including Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), women-led development initiatives, and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Even India's chosen G20 presidency slogan, "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (the world is one family), has faced China's opposition, as reported in a recent newspaper article.
This obstructionist stance has become a substantial challenge in achieving consensus within the G20. Despite New Delhi's efforts to bridge differences on crucial matters, China's opposition remains a significant hurdle.
The ongoing border conflict between India and China, lasting for the past three years, adds further significance to China's stance in G20 meetings.
Diplomatic circles have been discussing China's position at the G20, with observers noting a complex dynamic between India, China, and G7 members.
China's differing stance on issues like loan restructuring for vulnerable countries is noteworthy, given its extensive financial involvement with nations in Africa and Asia. These differences in positions can complicate the task of building consensus on international matters.
Some suggest that China's objections may be driven by a desire to hinder progress and prevent India from claiming success during its G20 presidency.
While India had played a key role in achieving consensus at the Bali leaders' summit last year, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message emphasized that "this is not an era of war," China's stance has introduced tensions and dampened the overall atmosphere within the G20.
