Germany is seeing a record influx of migrants entering the country through family reunification visas. This year alone, 121,000 such visas have been issued to non-European Union nationals, adding to the almost one million migrants who have utilized this program in the last decade.
The figures reported by the German Federal Foreign Office indicate a substantial increase compared to previous years. The current tally exceeds the previous high set in 2017 and surpasses last year’s statistics. Since 2015, 930,000 migrants have entered Germany through this scheme, with a notable correlation between this program and a rise in asylum applications.
The family reunification scheme primarily allows spouses, registered partners, parents, and minor unmarried children to join their families in Germany. Those entering through this scheme are granted permission to work upon arrival, provided they possess a residence permit.
However, eligibility for the visa involves stringent criteria. Applicants must hold valid passports, demonstrate a clean record devoid of criminal activity, and present no threat to Germany’s public safety. Similarly, those within Germany seeking to reunite with family members must meet specific prerequisites, including holding a valid residence permit, having health insurance, financial stability, and adequate accommodation space.
The cost of a German family reunion visa stands at €75 for adults, while children up to 18 years old are required to pay €37.50. These measures aim to ensure a systematic and secure reunification process for families while upholding safety and stability within the country.
