Germany to Prioritize Geothermal Energy, Skilled Workers at African Summit

05 Dec, 2024

The expansion of renewable energies, especially geothermal, and addressing Germany's shortage of skilled workers are key focuses at the German-African Business Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. Taking place from December 2 to 4, this summit serves as Germany’s most significant business event in Africa, according to the German Ministry of Economy. Discussions will center on geothermal energy expansion, green value creation, training skilled workers, start-ups, and the digital economy.

This year’s summit aims to address critical issues such as financing in Africa, energy prospects focusing on hydrogen, the recruitment of skilled workers for both Africa and Germany, digitalization, and innovation. Additionally, the cooperation in the raw materials sector will be a key topic. Robert Habeck, Germany's Minister for Climate and Economy, is attending the summit and plans to discuss German-Kenyan economic relations with Kenyan government representatives.

Habeck highlighted Africa's rapidly growing young population and vast natural resources, which present significant opportunities for renewable energy expansion and green value creation. This, he believes, creates immense potential for German companies in future sectors such as the digital economy and renewable energy technologies. Germany’s increasing need for skilled workers, especially in climate policy sectors, is also a pressing concern, with Habeck suggesting collaboration with Africa to train workers for both the African and German job markets.

The partnership between Germany and Kenya is further strengthened by Germany’s recognition of Kenya's success in geothermal energy production, particularly in the volcanic Rift Valley region. Last year, Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited a geothermal power plant in Kenya, emphasizing the need for Germany to follow Kenya’s example in advancing geothermal energy development. This collaboration aims to address Germany’s energy transition goals and labor shortages simultaneously.
