A pioneer in hybrid technology, Toyota Brazil will produce hybrid versions of all its cars, using locally-sourced batteries. CEO Evandro Maggio announced this as part of a R$11 billion investment by 2030. The first phase, worth R$5 billion, will launch two new models and build a new plant in Sorocaba, São Paulo. The second phase, R$6 billion, will develop new vehicle platforms and complete the transition from the Indaiatuba plant.
The Green Mobility and Innovation Program, which incentivizes energy-efficient vehicles, has encouraged this investment. Toyota, a leader in ethanol-powered hybrids since 2019, aims to maintain its market position as competitors introduce similar vehicles. The first new model, a compact hybrid, will be launched in 2025, with plans for locally-sourced battery production.
Toyota Brazil is also the country's largest vehicle exporter, with 40% of production sent abroad. Mr. Maggio, the first Brazilian CEO of Toyota Brazil, has diverse experience in the automotive industry. He emphasized the importance of maintaining certification integrity amid recent industry scandals. Despite challenges, Toyota remains committed to innovation and sustainability in Brazil.
