India and Brazil have deepened their bilateral relations since forming a strategic partnership in 2006, evolving into a multifaceted collaboration that now spans various sectors, including defense, space, trade, and technology. During the 9th India-Brazil Joint Commission Meeting in Delhi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need to address challenges in the growing trade relationship, underscoring the importance of ongoing dialogue to unlock the full potential of bilateral trade.
The partnership also extends to multilateral platforms like BRICS, IBSA, G20, and the UN, with India reaffirming its strong support for Brazil's G20 presidency. Jaishankar highlighted the shared commitment to promoting a more just and sustainable global order, particularly through their joint efforts within the G4 group, which advocates for UN Security Council reforms.
Amid these discussions, the issue of illegal immigration emerged as a critical concern, with reports of stranded migrants, including over 100 Indians, at São Paulo’s Guarulhos Airport due to Brazil’s new immigration regulations. These stricter policies aim to curb illegal immigration from Asia to the Americas, reflecting the complex challenges that both nations must navigate as they strengthen their strategic ties.
