Li Auto, a startup, surpasses Tesla in electric vehicle sales within China

In October, data from the China Passenger Car Association revealed that Chinese startup Li Auto outsold Tesla in the country. Li Auto recorded a remarkable 40,422 vehicle sales compared to Tesla's 28,626.

What sets Li Auto apart is its current lineup of all-SUVs equipped with a fuel tank for battery charging, addressing consumer concerns about driving range. While their first battery-only model is scheduled for delivery in February 2024, the company plans to launch three more such vehicles in the latter half of the following year.

Li Auto's current pricing ranges between 319,800 yuan to 459,800 yuan, somewhat higher than Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y, which start at 259,900 yuan and 263,900 yuan, respectively.

Despite the exceptional performance in October, it remains uncertain whether Li Auto will consistently outsell Tesla in the future. While Li Auto's Q3 earnings exceeded FactSet estimates, the company, unlike its local competitors, has no immediate intentions for international expansion.

However, the company aims to bolster its presence in the electric car market through advancements in driver-assist technology. Li Auto plans to significantly expand its research and development team for autonomous driving, aiming to increase it from around 900 individuals to over 2,500 by 2025, as stated by President Donghui Ma during an earnings call.
