Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, recently engaged in discussions with Brazilian officials to strengthen collaboration on Artificial Intelligence and GovTech. The meeting, which included representatives from ApexBrasil and the Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Enterprises, focused on leveraging Brazil’s experience in digital government solutions to enhance Nigeria’s public sector efficiency. The discussions align with Nigeria’s preparations for a Technology Exchange mission to Brazil in April 2025, aimed at fostering digital innovation and economic growth.
Brazil’s expertise in GovTech has proven instrumental in streamlining government services, making it an ideal partner for Nigeria’s digital transformation initiatives. Tijani emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation, highlighting how both nations, as leaders in the Global South, can harness AI to drive development. Strengthening ties in digital trade and AI-driven governance presents vast opportunities for both countries, paving the way for improved public sector services and technological advancements.
A notable aspect of the discussions was the recognition of IHS Towers, a Nigerian-founded telecommunications infrastructure company with a strong presence in Brazil. This reflects the deep-rooted trade relationship between the two nations, which recorded a bilateral trade volume of $2.9 billion in 2022. The trade has been primarily driven by petroleum and other commodities, showcasing the economic potential of further strengthening ties in emerging sectors like AI and digital technology.
This collaboration signals a new phase in Nigeria-Brazil relations, with technology playing a crucial role in shaping the future of governance and economic development. As both countries explore AI and GovTech innovations, this partnership is expected to yield long-term benefits, driving digital transformation, economic progress, and stronger diplomatic ties.
