Putin Accepts Xi's October Invitation, Cementing Ongoing China-Russia Business Relations

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a diplomatic exchange affirming their commitment to sustaining robust business cooperation between their two nations, according to media reports on Wednesday, September 20. During their meeting, President Putin graciously accepted an invitation extended by his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to visit China in October, coinciding with the Belt and Road Summit.

Following their discussions in Moscow, President Putin emphasized the alignment of Russia and China's shared vision to establish a "large Eurasian space." He specifically highlighted the crucial role played by China's Belt and Road Initiative in realizing this joint vision. The Belt and Road Initiative is a comprehensive program aimed at expanding Chinese influence in developing regions through extensive infrastructure projects.

Notably, since Russia's involvement in the Ukraine conflict, President Putin has shifted the country's focus towards strengthening ties with China. Meanwhile, China has maintained a neutral stance concerning the Ukraine conflict but has been vocal in denouncing Western sanctions against Moscow.

Furthermore, China has accused NATO and the United States of provoking Russian military actions and has declared an unwavering friendship with Russia.

During the visit, senior Russian security official Nikolai Patrushev advocated for closer policy coordination between Moscow and Beijing as a response to Western efforts aimed at containing both nations. This coordination is particularly pertinent as Putin engages in critical security discussions with Beijing.

The Kremlin has consistently voiced its support for Beijing as Russia and China fortify their alliance amidst deteriorating relations with the West. Wang Yi's four-day visit to Russia began on Monday, September 18.

This visit follows his talks with Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden, in Malta over the weekend. It is worth noting that President Putin had initially announced his plan to visit China in July, underscoring the growing significance of Sino-Russian relations on the global stage.
