Qatar and Brazil Forge Extensive Paths for Partnership and Collaboration

Qatar aims to bolster its global ties, especially with influential nations like Brazil. The visit of Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to Doha is expected to mark a new phase in the countries' nearly 50-year relationship, amidst political and economic challenges.

Diplomatic relations between Qatar and Brazil commenced in 1974, culminating in the opening of Qatar's Embassy in Brasilia in 1997. In 2005, reciprocal diplomatic representation saw Brazil open its embassy in Doha.

Recent talks in October 2023, held in Brasilia, between HE Secretary-General Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Laura da Rocha, aimed at reinforcing bilateral cooperation. These discussions encompassed various aspects of collaboration and support.

The last presidential visit from Brazil to Doha occurred in November 2021 when former President Jair Bolsonaro visited. During this visit, discussions centered on elevating economic partnerships to match both nations' economic potentials. Plans to continue negotiations on cooperation and investment agreements were also reiterated.

Acknowledging the importance of transportation, logistics, defense products, and science in their economies, both countries expressed intentions to explore cooperation in these sectors. Moreover, they started negotiations for a cooperation agreement in science, technology, and innovation.

Foundations for robust relations were laid during HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani's visit to Brazil in 2010, where several agreements were signed, spanning various sectors.

The relationship was further fortified during President Lula da Silva's visit in May 2010, with agreements signed in commerce, sports, tourism, news, and cultural domains.

Former President Bolsonaro's 2019 visit led to agreements in various fields and discussions on investment opportunities aligning with economic reforms in Brazil and Qatar's National Vision 2030.

Trade volume between Qatar and Brazil surged from QR 2.1 billion in 2020 to QR 3.8 billion in 2021, indicating strong economic ties. Qatar actively participates in Brazilian economic events, showcasing their deep-rooted relationship.

Brazil, renowned for its vast landmass and significant economic prowess, stands as a key agricultural and industrial player globally, solidifying its position as a dominant force in Latin America and the Caribbean.
