From August 28 to 30, 2024, officials from Singapore and Malaysia met in Johor to advance discussions on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). The talks focused on various topics including economic sectors, the movement of people and goods, ease of doing business, and talent development. This collaboration aims to strengthen regional business ecosystems and improve cross-border flows.
Singapore has expressed its commitment to working closely with Malaysia to finalize a comprehensive deal on the economic zone. Both countries are also preparing for the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat later this year, which will further solidify their partnership.
Chief Minister of Johor, Onn Hafiz Ghazi, indicated that the agreement might be signed in November, marking a delay from earlier expectations. Malaysia’s Economy Minister, Rafizi Ramli, had previously anticipated a September unveiling of the deal.
