The Sri Lanka – Germany Business Council (SLGBC) recently held its 25th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Hilton Colombo Residences, Colombo 2. The event was attended by prominent figures from both countries, with Dr. Felix Neumann, the German Ambassador to Sri Lanka, as the Chief Guest. During his address, Ambassador Neumann emphasized the long-standing partnership between Sri Lanka and Germany, noting the commitment of both nations to strengthening economic ties. He highlighted Germany’s readiness to assist Sri Lanka in its economic recovery, particularly in areas like skilled labor migration and vocational training. The Ambassador also recognized the robust presence of over 300 German brands in Sri Lanka and Germany’s significant role in the Sri Lankan economy.
In addition, Ambassador Neumann discussed Germany’s long-term involvement in Sri Lanka, stating that no German companies had withdrawn during the country’s recent economic challenges. He also touched on the tourism sector, revealing that Germany is the fourth-largest source of tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka, contributing more than 7% to the market share. These enduring people-to-people connections serve as a vital bridge between the two nations, fostering deeper bilateral relations.
At the AGM, Asoka Hettigoda, Chairman and Managing Director of Hettigoda Industries, was re-elected as President of SLGBC for the year 2024-2025. In his address, Hettigoda highlighted Germany’s importance as Sri Lanka’s fourth-largest export market, with exports like rubber, tea, and textiles totaling $888 million in 2022. He also noted the significant role of German investment in Sri Lanka, with 51 companies providing around 11,700 local jobs since 1951. He emphasized the need to strengthen trade and investment ties to support Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic recovery.
For the past 25 years, the SLGBC has played a pivotal role in fostering trade, tourism, and investment between Sri Lanka and Germany. It has facilitated numerous trade missions, investments, joint ventures, and business exchanges, benefiting both nations. The Council aims to continue promoting bilateral relations through activities such as information exchange, joint meetings with German business organizations, and the participation of Sri Lanka in international fairs held in Germany. The election results at the AGM also saw the appointment of Hilton Colombo Residences General Manager Karim Schadlou and C.G.V. Anthony & Sons Ltd. Director Roy Anthony as Vice Presidents. The Committee also welcomed several new member companies, including Aitken Spence, Diesel & Motor Engineering, and Walkers Tours. The outgoing President, Surendra Ediriweera, Managing Director of Ceylon Tours Ltd., will continue to serve as the Immediate Past President on the Committee.
