Tesla Issues Massive 1.6M Electric Vehicle Recall in China

06 Jan, 2024

Tesla is conducting a massive recall affecting over 1.6 million electric vehicles in China, encompassing various models, including Model S, X, 3, and Y.

The recall is prompted by issues related to automatic assisted steering and door latch controls. China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced the recall, emphasizing that remote upgrades from Tesla's facilities in Beijing and Shanghai will address the identified problems.

SAMR highlighted a specific concern related to the automatic assisted steering function, warning that drivers might misapply the level two combined assisted driving function, elevating the risk of collisions and posing safety hazards. Additionally, the recall extends to 7,538 imported Tesla models manufactured between October 26, 2022, and November 16, 2023, due to a detected problem with door unlock logic controls.

This isn't Tesla's first large-scale recall in China, as in 2022, the company recalled nearly 128,000 cars due to a rear motor inverter defect. Despite these challenges, China remains a crucial market and manufacturing hub for Tesla. The company's CEO, Elon Musk, has fostered strong ties with Chinese officials, underscoring the significance of Tesla's presence in the country. The Shanghai production facility, Tesla's inaugural "gigafactory" abroad, reported the delivery of approximately 947,000 vehicles in 2023, reinforcing the brand's substantial footprint in the Chinese market.
