US-China Business Conference Highlights Key Issues and Opportunities for Growth 

The Canton Fair Conference in New York highlighted the crucial trade relationship between the United States and China, emphasizing its significance for businesses globally. Hu Wei, president and CEO of Bank of China US, stressed the importance of resolving recent trade tensions to ensure a conducive environment for both sides. The conference, held at the Bank of China tower, brought together representatives from the Canton Fair, Chinese Consulate General, China Foreign Trade Centre (CFTC), and global business leaders.

Hu highlighted the conference's role in fostering trade and investment between the US and China, showcasing the deep interdependence of their business relations. The Canton Fair, a biannual event in Guangzhou, serves as a key indicator of China's economic and trade health. The latest fair attracted over 246,000 visitors, including 10,000 American companies.

Big Lots Stores, a US discount retail chain, has maintained long-term partnerships with Chinese manufacturers. Kevin Kuehl, the company's senior vice-president, noted the importance of these partnerships despite potential trade policy changes. Kuehl emphasized China's efficiency and cost-effectiveness in certain categories, which remain vital for Big Lots.

Other notable attendees included Chu Shijia of CFTC, Kate Sullivan of the Greater Columbus Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and Abraham Merchant of Merchants Hospitality. The conference underscored the intertwined economies of China and the US, with Chinese Consul General Huang Ping highlighting the necessity of their mutual cooperation. The next Canton Fair will take place from Oct 15 to Nov 4, continuing to provide a significant platform for international trade.
